Janky at Boalt

Dear friends,

They always say that folks who go through the fire together come out stronger, united, and motivated by a deep sense of community. Whatever your degree program or year, that fire can be as simple as dysfunctional electrical sockets, or the automated bathroom paper towel dispensers only giving you a 2-inch rectangle of paper despite fervent hand-waving.

To alleviate some of that frustration, we'd like to invite you to post on this thread about facilities issues. Our Building Staff are wonderful and over-stretched, so instead of bottling everything up and exploding at them in frustration, we wanted to provide a space to flag issues so that we can raise them in a timely manner. This will help everyone triage requests and make sure they are heard by the deciders.

Please try to keep things constructive and relatively kind; we definitely want things to be flagged, but not to get buck wild.

  1. The bathroom fan in downstairs boys (mens?) bathroom is broken -- it's an electrical, and now olfactory, issue. VDH is on alert.

  2. those swine-flu-dribble water fountains by the men's bathroom downstairs are awful and they're brand new. also peter there's no option for anonymous posting of comments on here, which is a problem!

  3. I'm sure many people have already alerted facilities to this, but the men's bathrooms downstairs get overrun with paper towels. I suspect that this is as much a student problem as it is a facilities issue, though.

  4. In the online schedule of classes, the feature that is supposed to allow you to search by a class's start time doesn't work.

  5. This is probably a bigger issue than can be addressed right now, but the recycling cans and trash cans around boalt are not consistent. So people in the cafe use the recycling as a trash can and the trash can as a recycling bin of sorts (I think it has to do with the colors). This might be a product of students, but I think that we need to make recycling as easy as possible for people otherwise they won't do it.

  6. This may be more infrastructure than facilities, but as long as they'r tearing up the law school, would it be possible to install phone booths somewhere? They don't actually have to have phones in them, of course--this is public school--but just be a private space where we can get ahold of potential employers during business hours, for example. Slash schedule a doctor's appointment. Slash where loud people (me, for example) can take their inane yammering. People could even just go in there if they have something crunchy to eat that might annoy the person next to them in the library? (That's for you, Peter.)

I nominate the hallway between the library and Zeb as a good location for our new phone booths. Or maybe somewhere inside the Student Center?

    KELLY says thanks for reading!

  7. We could sure use an ashtray on the terrace side of the building. Why, because everyone loves smoking? No, to prevent the build-up of cigarette butts on the stairs, etc. I try to be good and walk over to the art or anthro building ashtrays, but it's a pain.
