I'm chilling at the BHSA Election Booth, the results of which will determine my replacement. I'm feeling a bit nostalgic, and so am going to recap what BHSA has accomplished this year. BHSA often works behind the scenes, and so its actions go unnoticed.
BHSA Responsibilities
- Personally interviewed 49 students (20-30 minutes per interview, not counting hours of discussion on their merits) and appointed dozens of students to BHSA committees.
- Organized and ran 1L and BHSA elections
- Allotted funds to student organizations
- Organized graduation
- Bay Area Bar Review
- LLM/JD Joint Bar Review
- AJD
- Halfway Through Party
- Blood drive
- Food drive
- Class of 2010 food bank
- Pushed the administration and Dean Edley to have a town hall to discuss and answer questions regarding the student fee hike
- Standardized the online seating chart: next semester, students cannot select a seat online before the first session of class
- Revamped the kitchen, including 7.5 hours of nonstop cleaning by 3 BHSA members (Matt F., Alexis S., Alex R.). Convinced the administration to supply ongoing cleaning supplies.
- Helped the Queer Caucus get Dean Edley to sign a letter requesting the termination of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and send it to every law school dean nationwide, to ultimately be given to Congress
- (Being put before the faculty on Wednesday): Supported the Curriculum Committee to get the faculty to approve adding an "open narrative" question on the student evaluations and to have the information submitted disclosed to students. We need more than just numbers to make informed decisions on classes.
- In response to student complaints about court registration issues, we persuaded the administration to agree to the formation of a Registration Committee: this semester, a group of 6 students (three 1Ls, three 2Ls) reviewed the entire course offerings at the same time it was given to professors to review. The group made several recommendations and report the Registrar's Office was receptive and responded by making changes.
- In response to student complaints about the lack of computer after the recent computer downsizing, BHSA persuaded the administration to add additional computers, which are now located in the Student Center, across from BJELL's office.
- Met with Dean Edley and brought student issues and concerns to his attention.
- Created a Google Documents to facilitate a) Boalties to volunteer as hosts for Admitted Students Weekend after the administration informed us that the Admissions Office decided to not do it this year; and b) textbook exchanges.
