We are writing to let you know about some changes that will occur over Spring Break and the preparation required leading up to these changes. In response to student concerns raised last semester, additional lockers will be installed in the Laub Lobby near Booth Hall and Room 170. These lockers will take up the space we currently use to post fliers. We have been working with Student Services to find alternative places to post. Unfortunately, with fire code restrictions, we are prohibited from posting anywhere else in the building, including the new Student Center and on the construction posters along what will become the South Addition. We also cannot install additional bulletin boards. Therefore, we will be using the currently installed bulletin boards.
The plan is to reallocate all bulletin board space with two main objectives: providing a replacement for the space we are losing in Laub Lobby and providing bulletin board access to more Student Groups.
In sum:
- The largest bulletin board between Rooms 105 and 110 will be used primarily for general posting.
- The remaining bulletin boards, including the former "Boalt in the News" board will be divided amongst the groups. All of the journals will have a space approximately 26 inches by the current height of the board (this includes the wood dividers that will be installed).
- The remaining space will be divided amongst the registered organizations that currently have a board and those that submit a timely request to BHSA. We will do our best to accommodate all requests. We ask that student groups interested in board space contact BHSA by Friday, March 20, 2009 at bhsa@law.berkeley.edu.
- We are currently looking at dividing the space for the student groups in a way that would provide approximately 30 groups (in addition to the space for the journals) with an equal amount of space (approximately 2' x 2'). Once we have a concrete number of student groups that need space, we will assign bulletin board space randomly. We believe that allotting equally sized spaces and allocating them through random space assignments will provide the most equitable solution.
- BHSA will look at this issue annually to see when groups cease or new groups are formed.
- We are requesting that all of the student groups remove materials from their current boards by Friday, March 20, 2009.
- New board assignments will be made prior to our return from Spring Break so that groups can update their boards in preparation for Admit Day.
We look forward to working with you all on this and welcome your feedback, comments, and questions on the plan.
Thank you,
BHSA
